Nobel prize

Obama is deeply humbled by a Nobel prize that has yet to be deserved. Herta Muller follows in the trend of little-known European writers to win the Literature Nobel prize. I don't get it. The Nobel Prize does not have to be popular, but inspiring - this at least is how I see it.
Obama inspires through his sheer existence as the first. Herta Muller inspires - but I wish she was just an image for the last... victim of communism, the last testimony of communism? The dot at the end of an era, crowned with a Nobel Prize - to be remembered, but just that. An end. A beginning of something new.

Thanks Nikki for this ... although you don't quite seem to make your stance very clear. Are you for, against or on the fence?

I read an article today on the NY Times website. See full text at: Nobel jury defends Obama decision. Here they offer, or at least try to offer, some explanations on their choice.

As in every human cases though, I do believe there will always be opposing sides, those for "aye" and others on the "nay" side. Be that as it may, I wish and hope we focus more on the spirit and purpose of the Nobel Peace Prize and pay less attention to the members of the Norwegian committee or recipients. I recommend a quick read of the article as while resisting the strong urge to paraphrase it here.

Don't get me wrong, I strongly agree that the process, recipients and every hullabaloo surrounding the award is important; yet, the desire to bring peace, change lives, help someone else, make a meaningful difference thereby making the world a better place should consume us all. I rather should have more people asking on and focusing on what they will do to get nominated, and maybe win the award, themselves rather than being engulfed with the politics therein.

What I do gather from all this is the feeling that there’s are so much troubles and negative vibes around the world at the moment that every act of goodness and positivism is so easily recognised and rewarded … my humble analysis …

And ... as expected, the jury is still out ...
